If you are stuck between prompts, take 5 minutes to brain storm about each choice. At the end of the 5 minutes, consider choosing the one you had the most to write about.

What is the main idea you want to portray in your personal statement? Your topic sentence is going to be what drives your essay and keeps admissions counselors reading on. 

Some ideas for topic sentences:

  • Start with a question or a bold statement
  • Portray imagery and vivid language 
  • Start with a particular moment of a memory

Create 3-5 bullet points you want to include in your essay that supports and/or proves your topic sentence. Supporting details should include specific details that illuminate and describe the main idea.

Be sure to read your essay at different times of the day and multiple days a week. It also helps to have others read your essay and receive their feedback.
